SOTA has had great success with their excellent line of figures based on the Street Fighter license. Can Jazwares, who has picked up the license for Mortal Kombat, do the same? I have a review up today of two of the first series, Sub-Zero and Baraka, and that answer to that question is, unfortunately, a big no. What's wrong? What isn't? The line is a serious disappointment, and I'm betting there are other folks directly involved in this line - from sculpting to product management to retail - that are disappointed as well.

The guest review is from Matt Kayser, and covers the new Star Wars Evolutions set Anakin to Vader. He loves this set, particularly the Vader, and has some great photos. Check out all the reviews at the usual:

...I warned them about MK once already...difficult as it was to type after I had ripped out my own eyes in an attempt to clear my vision of their sheer craptacularity.

...and Big Lots Sub-Zero does come with his sword, Mike.

Then is he missing that lame ice ball?

You know what's funny - no matter how bad something is, there will always be people that end up defending it. It's as if it has to be good to validate their feelings for the license. I recently saw it with the Mal from Serenity, and now again with these MK figures. It boggles the mind.

No ice ball. So no real reason to pay more for the "deluxe"...except you need the base for him to stand up, as his peg holes are too large for any average base...

FYI to those who want to know: Sub Zero has only the ice sword, Baraka comes with two blades instead of 4, Scorpion with only one kitana, and Raiden with nothing at all. No bases. No "spear" for Scorpion, which is just insulting.

I really cannot fathom how desperate someone would have to be to find these MK figures acceptable. They are awful in so many ways that I simply could not write a serious review about them...I already wasted the money, I couldn't spare the time. It is amazing what some collector's will put up with...I will admit that I have a few toys that are not necessarily all that good that I like, primarily for their "camp" value, and I have a few older toys that I like which, simply due to being 10 or 15 or more years old, aren't up to today's standards. But there is no excuse whatsoever for these...things. I am hoping the line improves drastically, or dies swiftly. What a horrendous and checkered history MK has with toys! Maybe in another few years some company will finally do these characters right.

I thought the 7" Infinite Concepts MK figures were pretty nice.

...yes, they were. Except their distribution sucked in ways that simply boggled the mind, and retailers marked them up to insane prices.
